Long ago, very long ago, in a land not dissimilar from our own, there was a particular race of people. By enemies, they were often known as Ktini – The Beasts. The king became fond of this name of terror, and so he named a new city that he founded, what would become the capital city just before his death, Ktinipoli, City of Beasts. After several generations, these people came to know themselves merely as “Alithros”, a word merged from two with the meaning of “The True People”. It was around the time that this word came out to generalize the entire geographic area in which they lived that the overall empire began to break into more individualized city-states. The reason for this is so very simple: greed. Greed for power, as the ruling king had had no living children and no listed heir. His wife was pregnant, yes, and she gave birth to a son during the chaos. He disappeared, and many claimed he was dead. Now, centuries later, the descendants of the generals who split into different factions have finally reached a sort of peace. There have always been claims of being descended from this lost prince, but there has never been any sort of uproar or true claimants. Now, it seems as though the four families of long standing importance are beginning to groom the younger generation to take on a task. Some have masked intentions and some are flat out admitting that they want a throne of a wealthy and strong empire.
The separate city states all agreed with a council of many influential archons to send forth settlers and warriors to forge a path into a new land, a land that seems to have much wealth to offer the Alithros, but that it would be distributed fairly amongst all the families with only a marginally larger amount going to the family that had earned it. The explorers and traders who went to this place said that, after much tension, war had broken out among the tribes of people living there. The Alithros quickly took advantage of this and swept in, turning the native people, whom they felt were barbarians, on each other. Each family established a colony and encouraged many people to move so that the populations could grow and become strong. There was a coalition, an alliance, which held them together almost as though they were part of one nation-state.
The land in these colonies is fertile and plentiful, with natural resources abounding. It is the perfect patch, and it has become a valuable and desirable place to live. Many rich families have sent members over to work as governors or military commanders, taking up more swathes of land. Ambition is at work. It’s a very primitive drive at its heart, but there are pushes from all sides.
