One of the more warlike tribes, along with Mokhan, Ylarm is a very male-dominated and warrior-dominated tribe that excels in battle and war. They are situated to the west in the middle land of the tribes, and they are often pushing to have new land. Unlike the other tribes, some people in Ylarm fight completely nude. Women cannot become chieftains or warriors here, though they are allowed to be priests. Mostly, the men in Ylarm look down on women, and there is a deal of sexism, which makes their rivalry with the people of Mokhan all the more painful.
To choose a new chieftain, there are several requirements. First, the man must be chosen by the priests and the previous chieftain, while he is still alive, to participate in the contests to show that the men chosen all were blessed. Then, there are several levels to the competition, and they are well known by everyone in Ylarm. The first contest is a hunt for a white stag - since the priests breed and collect white deer, they just send one out. Then, they must kidnap a woman, generally from another tribe, and bring her back to Ylarm (this part often leads to war with Mokhan). Third, they must climb Tiavish Point and place a heavy stone atop it, with a streak of their blood, pick a flower from there, and return with the flower alive. After all of this, there is a battle -- a large mock battle and then duels. Of course, sometimes people die.
Regarding the Alithrans - There is a general consensus that there needs to be violence used against the invaders to make them go back to their homeland. There are people in Ylarm who know that it is impossible to win on their own, but many do not want to form an alliance with the other tribes because of their pride and because of how the Mokhan Tribe keeps trying to work tricky deals into it that would strip Ylarm of its power. A couple of people have murmured that they want a peaceful resolution, but they do not make themselves heard, for the people of Ylarm can be quite... harsh.
